Sometimes Word will just format things oddly and it’s not really clear what is going on. Seeing the formatting codes will really help.
1. Go into the Format menu
2. Click Reveal Formatting
3. Under options in the Reveal Formatting window, select the Show all formatting marks check box.

Do this again to turn it off or just close the Reveal Formatting window.
- Non-printing character or formatting marks are characters for content designing in word processors, which aren't displayed at printing. It is also possible to customize their display on the monitor. The most common non-printable characters in word processors are pilcrow, space, non-breaking space, Tab character etc.
- To make nonprinting formatting characters visible, either click the Show/Hide paragraph marks and other hidden formatting symbols button (see image below), or press ctrl-shift-8. This actually toggles the display, so you can hide them again by repeating this action.
- In an app on your Mac, choose Edit Emoji & Symbols, or press Control-Command-Space to open the Character Viewer. If you previously used the Character Viewer, or set the option in Keyboard preferences to show it in the Input menu, you can also open it from that menu. To open Keyboard preferences, choose Apple menu System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Keyboard.
- You can show or hide non-printing characters as you work on a Word document. Being able to see non-printing characters is especially helpful when you're trying to locate multiple tab characters where only one should be or when you're looking for errant punctuation, such as blank paragraphs or extra spaces. See Table 3.2 for a complete list of.

1. Go to the Ribbon and select the Home tab.
2. Go to the Paragraph section of the Ribbon.
3. Select the Show/Hide button. Turn it off by selecting the Show/Hide button again.
If not all of the formatting marks disappear when you turn it off:
1. Click the File button .
2. Select Options.
3. From the left pane, select Display.
4. Find the Always show these formatting marks on the screen section and uncheck the corresponding checkmarks for the formatting marks.
5. Click the OK button.
